[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byeong-nae) is focusing on disinfection of garbage sites and food waste disposal areas within apartment complexes, along with perforation (making holes) of abandoned tires left in residential areas and roadsides across 16 neighborhoods to eliminate major breeding grounds of mosquito larvae.
According to Nam-gu on the 29th, starting from this day, perforation work on abandoned tires to remove larval habitats will be carried out every Friday for about four months in the 16 neighborhoods within the district.
In particular, in densely populated residential areas, multiple abandoned tires are placed by each household to secure parking spaces in front of houses, becoming a hotbed for mosquito outbreaks and the root cause of complaints related to disinfection. Therefore, efforts will be concentrated on managing abandoned tires mainly in residential areas and along roadsides.
To this end, Nam-gu is conducting weekly perforation work on discarded tires on foot in each of the four zones within the district, together with representatives from four commissioned companies responsible for summer disinfection work in the respective zones.
In addition, disinfection will also focus on garbage sites and food waste disposal areas within apartment complexes, which are among the major breeding grounds for larvae.
A Nam-gu official said, “As the period of active mosquito activity has arrived, we have decided to prioritize mosquito larva removal work first,” adding, “We will do our best to prevent the introduction and spread of infectious diseases transmitted by mosquitoes.”
