[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Han-hyuk Lee] Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Kang In-gyu) announced on the 29th that it has launched a campaign to promote the ‘Citizen Safety Insurance,’ a livelihood stabilization support system for citizens and their families who have suffered death or aftereffects from unexpected accidents.
In particular, by directly providing information on the coverage of Citizen Safety Insurance to the victims' families at the time of accident reporting, it contributes to the smooth handling of accidents and the stabilization of their lives.
Earlier this month, the city expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family of citizen Mr. K, who tragically lost his life in an unexpected fire accident at a logistics warehouse in Icheon, and guided them on the coverage details and application procedures of the Citizen Safety Insurance to ensure at least minimum livelihood stability.
The bereaved family will receive the death insurance payout from the insurance company according to the insurance policy due to the fire accident.
Previously, the city reported that last year, a total of 21 cases were compensated through Citizen Safety Insurance, with insurance payouts amounting to 42 million KRW paid to the insured or victims' families.
This year, so far, insurance payouts totaling 16 million KRW have been made for four cases including traffic, falls, and agricultural machinery accidents.
Citizen Safety Insurance is a social security system implemented since September 2017 as part of creating a safety-first city.
All residents registered as living within the jurisdiction (including foreigners) are automatically enrolled, and it is characterized by coverage that can overlap with individually purchased insurance.
It provides insurance payouts up to 10 million KRW to citizens who suffer damage such as death or aftereffects from disasters, accidents, traffic, or safety incidents.
Meanwhile, the city signed an operational contract for the Naju-type Citizen Safety Insurance with Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance from March 3 this year to February 28 next year, with a coverage period of one year.
The main coverage includes up to 10 million KRW for injury, death, or aftereffects caused by explosion, fire, collapse, or landslide; up to 2 million KRW for injury or death from traffic accidents; and up to 10 million KRW for injury or death from robbery.
It also supports coverage for accidents frequently occurring in rural areas, such as up to 10 million KRW for death or aftereffects caused by agricultural machinery accidents, and up to 10 million KRW for death caused by poisoning or exposure to toxic substances.
Additionally, insurance payouts are provided within the coverage limits for ▲injury death or aftereffects at 2 million KRW ▲drowning death at 10 million KRW ▲natural disaster death at 10 million KRW ▲injuries from traffic accidents within school zones at 10 million KRW (applicable only to children under 12 years old).
However, according to Article 732 of the Commercial Act (Prohibition of contracts for persons under 15 years old), compensation for ‘death due to accident’ is not provided for those under 15 years old.
To claim insurance, submit the insurance claim form, resident registration (or equivalent) certificate, and other required documents to Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance within three years of the incident.
Mayor Kang In-gyu said, “We will strengthen year-round promotional activities to ensure that no one misses out on benefits due to lack of prior knowledge of Citizen Safety Insurance,” and added, “We will do our best to operate and improve the system so that citizens affected by unexpected disasters and accidents can receive at least minimum livelihood stability.”
