[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] Yoon Mi-hyang, the elected member of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 29th, "I will make efforts to unravel the tangled issues related to my legislative activities, and I will provide explanations and work responsibly until the public is convinced," effectively expressing her intention to retain her parliamentary seat.
On the same day, Yoon held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office and said, "I want to work even harder than the past 30 years to fulfill the wishes of the grandmothers who stood as women’s rights activists and peace activists, such as Grandmother Kim Bok-dong and Grandmother Kim Hak-soon."
She added, "Hearing again the claim that the 2015 Korea-Japan comfort women agreement was justified, I want to ensure that such a humiliating history is never repeated in our history," and "I will also seek ways to prevent the recurrence of wartime sexual violence."
Yoon also stated, "I will thoroughly clarify everything so as not to disgrace the honor of the victim grandmothers and not to bring shame to the 30-year history of the Jeong Dae-hyeop movement." She continued, "If there are mistakes, I will take corresponding responsibility," emphasizing, "I will clear up any suspicions without a trace through the prosecution investigation and additional explanations."
She said, "This matter was especially difficult because it originated from the severe criticism of the victim grandmother, who became a symbol of the Jeong Dae-hyeop movement as a human rights activist beyond being a victim," and added, "During the 30 years of the challenging Jeong Dae-hyeop movement, I reflect on and review myself for not empathizing more delicately with the grandmothers and for not reflecting and innovating every moment due to the impatience to restore the victims’ honor as soon as possible."
Yoon concluded, "I ask that the defamation and distortion that damage the achievements made together by the victims, the public, Jeong Dae-hyeop, and Jeonguiyeon, as well as the honor of the victims of the Japanese military comfort women, stop," and said, "While even one of them is still alive, I will do my best to uncover the truth, ensure the Japanese government’s responsibility, and prevent recurrence in irreversible ways."
