[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Kim Yong-hee (61), a Samsung dismissed worker who has been staging a high-altitude protest on a CCTV tower at the Gangnam Station intersection in Seoul demanding reinstatement, is ending his protest after 355 days.
Im Mi-ri, a research professor at Korea University’s Institute of Korean History and the representative of the Samsung Dismissed Workers High-Altitude Protest Committee, posted on Facebook on the 29th, "We have drafted an agreement with Samsung and will hold a press conference today at 6 p.m. in front of the tower at Exit 2 of Gangnam Station," adding, "Thank you to everyone who supported and stood in solidarity."
Kim, who had worked at Samsung Aerospace (Techwin) factory in Changwon Industrial Complex since 1982, was unfairly dismissed at the end of May 1995 for his activities as the founding chairman of the Samsung labor union in the Gyeongnam region, and has been protesting against Samsung demanding an apology and honorable reinstatement.
Having fought for over 24 years, Kim climbed the CCTV tower near Gangnam Station, close to Samsung Electronics Seocho building, on June 10 last year, a month before what would have been his retirement date if he had continued working at the company. During his high-altitude protest, he also undertook three hunger strikes.
