1970s Zainichi Korean Student Spy Ring Case Reenacted in Play 'Ikaino-ui Nun'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The play "Ikaino's Eye," which depicts the stories of people who went to Japan during the Japanese colonial period, the Korean War, and the April 3rd Incident, will be performed from July 2 to 12 at the Daehangno Arts Theater Small Theater.

"Ikaino's Eye" was selected for the Korea Arts Creation Academy Next Generation Spotlight 2018! and premiered last year. This year, it was chosen as the 2020 Creation Workshop's Repertoire of the Year work and will take the stage for the second time.

"Ikaino's Eye" deals with the lives of the people of Ikaino, located in Osaka, Japan, a village where residents lived as border people who could not belong to either side. Based on a new novel by Zainichi Korean writer Won Soo-il, this work portrays the worries and conflicts experienced by Zainichi Koreans against the backdrop of the 1970s Zainichi Korean student spy group incident.

Director Kim Yeon-min said, "Through the play 'Ikaino's Eye,' I hope it will be a process of not just understanding the historical fact of the 1970s Zainichi Korean student spy group incident superficially, but comparing it with today's society and viewing it anew."

Actors Jeon Guk-hyang, Kang Ae-sim, Jang Seong-ik, Moon Kyung-hee, Shin Moon-sung, Jeong Won-jo, Lee Si-hoon, Park Hee-jung, Kim Na-yeon, and Kim Joo-won, who are actively working on stage and various works and media, will appear.

Tickets for "Ikaino's Eye" can be reserved from 2 PM on June 2 through Interpark and the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service website. The venue will implement COVID-19 prevention and containment measures such as socially distanced seating, unified entry doors, temperature checks, mandatory mask-wearing, and health questionnaires.
