[Asia Economy Reporter Seolgina Jo] A ‘Radio Wave Playground’ where small and medium-sized enterprises and research institutions in the radio wave field can conduct various wireless experiments such as drones and autonomous vehicles in a shielded space has opened.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the morning of the 29th that it held the opening ceremony of the Radio Wave Playground at the Korea Radio Promotion Association Electromagnetic Technology Institute located in Yongsan, Seoul.
The Radio Wave Playground is an electromagnetic wave shielded space with an area of 450㎡ and a height of 10m, equipped with electromagnetic wave measurement equipment. Experienced professionals with abundant research and development experience will be stationed to support experiments and measurements. Support for technical difficulties will also be provided by utilizing a pool of external experts in the radio wave field.
The Ministry of Science and ICT judged that radio waves, which were previously used mainly for broadcasting and communication, are expanding their scope of use to all industrial sectors such as smart homes, smart factories, autonomous vehicles, and drones with the advent of the 4th Industrial Revolution era, and has been promoting the establishment of the Radio Wave Playground where various wireless experiments can be conducted without external radio wave interference or damage.
Companies or research institutions wishing to use the Radio Wave Playground can apply through the Korea Radio Promotion Association’s ‘Radio Engineering Lab’ website (www.rflab.or.kr). According to the usage procedure, the facility can be used free of charge for up to 5 days.
Jang Seok-young, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “Radio waves are a foundational technology used in all industrial sectors, and we hope that the establishment of the Radio Wave Playground, a free radio wave experiment space, will be an opportunity for the radio wave industry to grow further,” adding, “We will continue to promote government support for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in the radio wave field.”
