Jeonnam Province (Governor Kim Young-rok) announced on the 28th that, together with the Korea Fisheries Entrepreneurs Jeollanam-do Federation, they conducted a marine debris cleanup activity on the 27th around Dangsa Island, Soan-myeon, Wando-gun.
This cleanup activity was promoted to alleviate the difficulties faced by fishermen due to reduced seafood consumption caused by COVID-19 and the increased marine debris.
About 150 people, including Jeonnam Provincial Assembly members Shin Eui-jun and Lee Kwang-il, Korea Fisheries Entrepreneurs Association Chairman Choi Dong-ik, Wando County Chapter Chairman Kim Dong-su, fisheries entrepreneurs, and local residents participated.
The participants collected about 40 tons of marine debris, including discarded fishing nets, Styrofoam buoys, and aquaculture equipment, washed ashore on the coast of Dangsa Island, Soan-myeon. They used nine fishing vessels and one Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation patrol vessel to handle the collected marine debris.
The province plans to continue various public interest activities such as cleanup efforts and campaigns.
Yoon Young-joo, Director of the Maritime and Port Division of Jeonnam Province, said, "We appreciate the fishermen who participated in the trash collection activities to clean the sea, their livelihood ground, on the upcoming 'Sea Day' on the 31st. We will continue to expand coastal cleanup activities with private organizations to create a clean sea."
