Effective from May... Choose one day between Tuesday and Thursday
Expecting increased profitability through work style innovation
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Dongkuk Steel has become the first in the steel industry to regularize remote work. The company explained that the remote work system was introduced not only to prevent the spread of COVID-19 but also as part of its Digital Transformation (DX) efforts.
According to the steel industry on the 28th, Dongkuk Steel has regularized remote work once a month for all employees starting in May. Employees can choose either Tuesday or Thursday to work from home.
Dongkuk Steel had temporarily implemented remote work as a social distancing measure due to the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases. The reason for regularizing remote work from this month is to innovate work methods through DX.
Vice Chairman Jang Se-wook has emphasized since last year the need to focus on expanding profitability to defend against the downturn in the industry. To this end, the company is working on expanding sales of high value-added products and changing work methods.
Before introducing remote work, Dongkuk Steel conducted a survey among all employees to gather opinions on implementing remote work, checked IT systems, and carried out pilot video conferencing operations as preparatory work.
Previously, Dongkuk Steel also implemented a flexible seating system as part of these efforts. Employees at Dongkuk Steel work like those at startup companies, freely choosing their seats instead of assigned ones after arriving at the office.
A Dongkuk Steel official explained, "More than 80% of employees supported remote work according to the survey results, and after the pilot implementation, we judged that the efficiency of remote work did not significantly decline, so we officially introduced remote work."
