Hyundai Heavy Industries and Mipo Shipyard Obtain Certification for 'One Coat System' Anti-Fouling Paint

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] On the 27th, the Korean Register awarded the basic approval in principle (AIP) for the eco-friendly solvent-free coating "1 Coat System" for ship ballast water tanks to Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.

Solvent-free coatings do not contain organic solvents, significantly reducing the emission of volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere, thereby preventing air and environmental pollution. They also reduce the risk of accidents such as suffocation, explosion, and fire that may occur during work in confined spaces.

Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard's 1 Coat System demonstrates excellent performance equivalent to applying solvent-free coating more than twice with just one application on ballast water tanks, meeting the quality standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

With a single coating, it is possible to form films of various thicknesses, improving shipbuilding efficiency.

By obtaining the Korean Register's basic approval in principle this time, both companies have established the technical foundation for the eco-friendly solvent-free coating 1 Coat System, and the Korean Register explained that it is expected to further enhance ship quality and price competitiveness in the future.

The Liberian flag administration also awarded the basic approval in principle for the 1 Coat System of both companies on the same day.
