Organist Shin Dong-il Performs Live Without Audience at Lotte Concert Hall

[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Organist Dongil Shin, professor of church music at Yonsei University (photo), will hold a live performance without an audience at 5 p.m. on the 28th at Lotte Concert Hall.

The Lotte Cultural Foundation stated that this special concert is intended to provide healing and comfort to those exhausted by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), and the performance will be broadcast live on the Lotte Concert Hall YouTube channel. Lotte Concert Hall is the first classical hall in Korea with a pipe organ installed in a private performance venue.

This performance was proposed by Professor Shin and realized in response by the Lotte Cultural Foundation. Professor Shin will participate in the performance free of charge.

Professor Shin said, "Seeing the COVID-19 situation worsen, I wondered what I could do as a musician, so I proposed an online concert to the Lotte Cultural Foundation, and they readily agreed, making the performance possible. Considering what I have received from society, I thought it was natural to share music with many people through this opportunity."

Professor Shin will perform Johann Sebastian Bach's "Prelude and Fugue in D major," "BWV 523," "Sheep May Safely Graze (arranged by Power Bigs)," Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Fantasia," Edward Elgar's "Enigma Variations" Nimrod, and C?sar Franck's "Hero." He explained, "I selected pieces that are not difficult for music lovers with ordinary musical knowledge rather than organ enthusiasts."

Professor Shin graduated from Yonsei University College of Music and studied at the Conservatoire National Sup?rieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon and the Conservatoire de Paris in France. After winning the grand prize at the 2006 Chartres International Organ Competition, he performed on stages in Europe and the United States. Since 2011, he has been teaching students at his alma mater.

Professor Shin said, "I want to use this performance as an opportunity to explore the possibilities of online concerts and identify their strengths and weaknesses."
