UK 'Reconsiders' Use of Chinese 5G Equipment... Huawei Expresses Desire to Maintain Cooperation

[Asia Economy Reporter Son Sunhee] As the United States strengthens sanctions against China's Huawei, the United Kingdom is reportedly reconsidering the use of Huawei equipment in the construction of 5th generation (5G) communication networks.

On the 25th (local time), according to local media, the UK government officially announced that the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), under the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), a government intelligence agency specializing in surveillance and interception, is investigating additional risks associated with the use of Huawei equipment. It is known that the reconsideration of Huawei equipment usage was discussed at the National Security Council meeting held last week.

The UK government's announcement is interpreted as a response to the recent additional US sanctions on Huawei. The US has so far regulated the export of domestically produced semiconductors to Huawei and recently moved to revise export regulations requiring overseas companies using US technology to obtain US permission before supplying semiconductors to Huawei.

The UK government is publicly citing "security concerns." A UK government spokesperson reportedly explained, "The security and resilience of our networks are paramount," adding, "Following the US's announcement of additional sanctions on Huawei, the NCSC is thoroughly examining the potential impact on UK networks."

Until January, the UK government allowed Huawei equipment in non-core parts of the 5G network construction project, provided it did not exceed a certain share (35%). The change in stance is interpreted as being influenced by the UK's awareness of intelligence cooperation with the 'Five Eyes' alliance countries, including the US.

Relatedly, it is reported that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson instructed to eliminate any possibility of Chinese involvement in the UK's infrastructure construction projects by 2023.

Meanwhile, regarding the UK government's measures, Huawei Vice Chairman Victor Zhang reportedly stated, "Our priority is to continue building a reliable and secure 5G network across the UK," adding, "We wish to maintain a close cooperative relationship with the UK and are willing to discuss any concerns that may arise with the NCSC."
