UN Secretary-General Urges to End COVID Hate Speech

[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] Ant?nio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, has called for an end to hate-inciting remarks amid the global spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

On the 8th (local time), Secretary-General Guterres stated in a video posted on Twitter, "Anti-foreigner sentiment is surging both online and on the streets, and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories are spreading," adding, "There are also anti-Muslim attacks related to COVID-19."

He expressed regret over the current situation where immigrants and refugees are being blamed as the source of the COVID-19 virus through the internet, and photos and videos depicting the elderly, who are most vulnerable to COVID-19, as disposable.

He emphasized, "We have a duty to fight the pandemic, protect people, end stigmatization, and prevent violence," and added, "I hope everyone stands against hatred, respects each other's dignity, and shows kindness to all."
