[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, has stepped forward to encourage SK sports team athletes who are facing difficulties due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), including the postponement of the Olympics, league suspensions, and games without spectators.

According to SK, on the afternoon of the 7th, Chairman Chey met via video call with six individuals: Kim On-a of SK Sugar Gliders (handball), Kim Dong-cheol of SK Hawks (handball), Jeong Jo-guk of Jeju United (football), Kim Sun-hyung of SK Knights (basketball), Director Ryu Min-ho of SK Telecom Para-cycling Team, and Ha Jae-hoon of SK Wyverns (baseball), to offer encouragement.

At the meeting, Chairman Chey said, "Although all the sports team athletes are facing unprecedented difficulties, I have heard that they are doing their best to give strength and courage to the public," adding, "Just as prepared companies can grow into stronger enterprises through innovation in work methods even amid the COVID-19 crisis, if SK sports team coaches and athletes unite with one heart and one mind, they can grow into a stronger team that delivers greater inspiration."

In response, athlete Kim On-a said, "With the Tokyo Olympics postponed, I am taking this as an opportunity to build my physical condition," and added, "To ease the disappointment of the sudden end of the handball season, I am trying to show fans a lot of my training through YouTube and social media."

Chairman Chey also did not forget to remind them of their social roles as athletes.

Chairman Chey emphasized, "Before being athletes of the sports team, you are members of society, and there may be acquaintances or relatives around you who are struggling," adding, "Let us work together to provide warm support even in places that are not easily seen or meticulously cared for, so that everyone can live with peace of mind."

Prior to this, Chairman Chey also held video meetings to encourage SK employees stationed overseas, including in China, as well as SK Bioscience members who are making company-wide efforts to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.
