After Entering Baseline Blood Pressure, Measured with Smartwatch Heart Rate Sensor
Samsung Health Monitor App to Launch in Q3
Measurement Feature Available on Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Others
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Samsung Electronics' smartwatches will soon be able to check blood pressure in real time. A mobile application developed by Samsung that can measure blood pressure has received approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and will be released within the third quarter.
On the 21st, Samsung Electronics announced that its 'Samsung Health Monitor' mobile application received approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. This feature will also be supported on smartwatches such as the 'Galaxy Watch Active 2.'
The 'Samsung Health Monitor' app measures blood pressure using a cuff blood pressure monitor worn on the arm to measure and input a reference blood pressure, then continuously measures blood pressure by utilizing the smartwatch's heart rate sensor. After measuring blood pressure with a smartwatch capable of blood pressure measurement, users can check the measured values and previously stored history on the mobile app connected via Bluetooth to their smartphone.
The measurement principle is to compare and analyze the pulse waveform measured by the smartwatch against the reference blood pressure to display blood pressure and pulse rate. The reference blood pressure must be calibrated every four weeks using a cuff blood pressure monitor.
Samsung Electronics plans to release the 'Samsung Health Monitor' app by the third quarter of this year. The app will be provided on the 'Galaxy Watch Active2,' which has a built-in sensor capable of measuring blood pressure, and on smartwatches that support blood pressure measurement functionality.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety stated that the Samsung Health Monitor app meets the accuracy standards for blood pressure and pulse rate required for existing automatic electronic blood pressure monitors, thereby granting approval for app use.
Yang Taejong, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Wireless Business Division Health Team, said, "This is a representative example of how Samsung's innovative hardware and software can contribute to consumers' health. It will help countless people worldwide who are exposed to the risk of hypertension."
