[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The screen size of the foldable smartphone 'Galaxy Fold 2,' set to be released in the second half of this year, will be larger than its predecessor. It is also expected that the front camera will change from a notch to a punch hole, and the S Pen will be supported.

On the 20th (local time), Ross Young, a display market analyst and founder of Display Supply Chain Consultants, revealed information about the Galaxy Fold 2's display size, front camera, screen resolution, and refresh rate via Twitter.

The main screen size when the Galaxy Fold 2 is unfolded is expected to be 7.59 inches (resolution 1689*2213), slightly larger than the previous model (7.3 inches). The cover display size, visible when folded, will also be wider at 6.23 inches (resolution 2267*819) compared to the previous model's 4.6 inches. A larger cover display allows for more tasks to be performed even when the device is folded. The main display's refresh rate is 120Hz, the same as the Galaxy S20, while the cover display supports 60Hz. It is expected that the technology to embed the front camera inside the display will not be applied.

There is a possibility that the Galaxy Fold 2 will support the S Pen to allow the wide screen to be used like a tablet. Ross Young stated that the S Pen will be supported, but it is unclear whether it can be used only on the external cover display or also on the main display. To prevent marks from a sharp pen tip, foldable display technology and durability need to be further enhanced, which remains a challenge.

IT specialist media SamMobile explained, "It has not been clearly specified whether the S Pen supported on the Galaxy Fold 2 can be used on which display or on both products. Foldable displays are not resistant to pressure from sharp objects like the S Pen, but since Samsung has made significant progress with UTG technology, there is a possibility of S Pen support."

SamMobile added, "Potential consumers of the Galaxy Fold skipped the first model, but the story changes if the S Pen is included. The S Pen is one of the most anticipated additional features for this product, and if the Galaxy Fold 2 actually offers this function, it could attract tremendous attention and elevate foldable smartphones into the tablet category."

Samsung Electronics is expected to adopt Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), the same display material used in the Galaxy Z Flip, for the Galaxy Fold 2's display. UTG is a thin glass material that is more resistant to external shocks and scratches compared to the polyimide material applied to the Galaxy Fold. The notch on the upper right corner of the main screen when unfolded is also likely to disappear. Instead of a notch design for the front camera, the screen is expected to be filled with a round punch hole design.
