[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province's 'Disaster Basic Income' (100,000 KRW per person) has surpassed a remarkable 830,000 applicants within just 11 hours of opening applications. This means that about 80,000 people applied per hour. As more residents applied for the Disaster Basic Income than initially expected, the province immediately took measures such as increasing server capacity.
According to Gyeonggi Province on the 10th, as of 2 a.m. that day, a total of 826,226 people had applied through the Gyeonggi Disaster Basic Income website (basicincome.gg.go.kr). The estimated total amount requested by these applicants was 135.9 billion KRW.
Looking at the number of applicants by time slot, since online applications began at 3 p.m. on the 9th, the breakdown is as follows: ▲ 80,000 people from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. (26,666 people per hour) ▲ 296,277 people from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (98,759 people per hour) ▲ 449,949 people from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. the next day (89,989 people per hour). It is analyzed that many people applied late at night when access was smooth.
The province initially designed the website to handle more than 200,000 simultaneous users. They also ensured stability by using private cloud services with 30 web servers and 4 database servers to allow smooth site access.
However, on the first day of applications, simultaneous access peaked at 240,000 users, causing server overload. The authentication server required for mobile phone verification went down, causing inconvenience.
In response, the province requested the mobile authentication company to restore the server, and authentication services resumed at 8 p.m. on the 9th. They also used a queue system to limit simultaneous users to 50,000, improving the speed of mobile phone and card authentication so that processing takes 1 to 3 minutes.
The province plans to increase the number of mobile authentication support companies from one to three and expand the credit card authentication center servers from 5 to 20 to enable residents to apply quickly and without inconvenience.
A provincial official urged, "Since the Gyeonggi Disaster Basic Income is not on a first-come, first-served basis but will be provided to all residents, please apply at your convenience."
