Software Policy Research Institute Projects Domestic AI Talent Shortage of 9,986 by 2022
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] On the 8th, Koo Yoon-cheol, Vice Minister of Strategy and Finance, held a 'Meeting to Accelerate AI Talent Development' with related agencies and private experts.
Vice Minister Koo stated, "Compared to major advanced countries, our country is severely lacking in talent." He continued, "Although the government is investing heavily in talent development, there are still criticisms that both the quantity and quality are insufficient." According to the Software Policy Research Institute, it is projected that by 2022, there will be a shortage of 9,986 AI talents domestically.
This meeting was held to develop an innovative leading model to accelerate AI talent development, which the government is promoting as part of the Fiscal Innovation Task Force (TF).
Last year, the government selected a total of five universities, including Korea University and Sungkyunkwan University, to operate AI graduate school projects. Additionally, three more schools are planned to be selected this year. He emphasized, "For AI graduate schools to be successfully established, strengthening ties with the industry is necessary."
He also explained, "AI must be integrated with specific fields such as manufacturing, healthcare, finance, and safety," adding, "It is necessary to cultivate talent that can be immediately deployed in the field."
Meanwhile, the government plans to prepare a plan to reorganize the AI graduate school project and a concrete leading model for AI talent development within the first half of the year, and reflect it in next year's budget proposal.
