Chungnam, Climate Change Adaptation Project Evaluation 'Excellent'

[Asia Economy (Naepo) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province received an excellent evaluation in the ‘2019 Chungnam Climate Change Adaptation Measures Implementation Evaluation.’

According to the province on the 6th, the implementation evaluation is conducted annually based on the ‘Local Government Climate Change Adaptation Measures Detailed Implementation Plan.’ The purpose is to systematically manage climate change adaptation measures and enhance their effectiveness.

This year, Chungnam conducted the implementation evaluation by commissioning the Chungnam Research Institute to comprehensively evaluate a total of 85 projects. When the detailed project performance goals are expressed as quantitative results, they are evaluated using quantitative indicators, and projects that are non-quantitative are evaluated using qualitative indicators.

The climate change adaptation projects promoted by the province last year included 12 in the health sector, 15 in the agriculture and fisheries sector, 13 in water management, 13 in disaster and calamity, 18 in forest and ecosystem, 7 in land and coastal areas, and 7 in other sectors, totaling 85 projects.

As a result of the comprehensive evaluation, 74 projects (87%) were rated as very excellent, 6 projects (7%) as excellent, and 5 projects (6%) as average, with 94% of the total receiving an evaluation of excellent or higher, and no projects were found to be inadequate.

Previously, the province was selected as an excellent region in the metropolitan sector for two consecutive years in 2018 and 2019 in the local government climate change adaptation measures implementation evaluation hosted by the Ministry of Environment, receiving a government commendation.

A provincial official stated, “As various disasters caused by climate change occur frequently, the importance of climate change adaptation is further increasing,” and added, “Based on the evaluation results, the province will discover proactive countermeasures to reduce direct and indirect damage caused by climate change and implement them effectively.”
