Hamlet Appears in Sejong City, a Hotbed of Land Speculation, in the Play 'Jochiwon Haemuni'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The play "Jochiwon Haemuni," which satirizes the reality of power lust and materialism rampant in the villages around Jochiwon-eup, Yeongi-gun, Chungnam Province, where land speculation was rampant around the time of Sejong City’s construction, will be performed from the 10th to the 19th at the Daehangno Arts Theater Small Theater.

"Jochiwon Haemuni" is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s "Hamlet," set in Jochiwon around the time of Sejong City’s construction. While preserving the essence of the classic, it has been reborn as a play that everyone can easily understand and enjoy through creative reinterpretation.

"Jochiwon Haemuni" won the 4th Byeoksan Playwriting Award in 2014. At the time of selection, it was praised as a work that stood out for its elegant Chungcheong dialect and richly utilized theatrical devices. The tragedy of Hamlet is transformed into a comedy infused with Chungcheong-style humor, and the fast-paced development shows the tense atmosphere of the events.

Fourteen actors including Seon Jong-nam, Lee Cheol-hee, Kim Moon-sik, and Kim Jeong-hwan will portray 18 distinctive characters. Additionally, during the final commotion that takes place on a Ssireum (Korean wrestling) ring, the audience will also participate in the play.
