[Asia Economy Reporter Joselgina Cho] LG Uplus announced on the 5th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with power generation company GS EPS to introduce a '5G-based smart power plant solution.'
A smart power plant is a power plant that innovates the operation and management of power plant facilities based on 5G, including remote operation, equipment diagnosis, and logistics automation. Workers can easily monitor various locations across the power plant complex, which spans hundreds of thousands of pyeong, remotely without having to visit each site every time, and various equipment can be diagnosed 24/7 through the Internet of Things (IoT). Necessary parts can also be automatically transported using robots.
According to the agreement, the two companies will cooperate on ▲developing an augmented reality (AR)-based power equipment data analysis and remote monitoring system ▲establishing IoT-based equipment diagnosis solutions such as gas leak detection and motor diagnosis ▲introducing autonomous robots for logistics automation.
First, LG Uplus will establish a dedicated 5G network at the GS EPS Dangjin Power Plant in Chungnam by the first half of the year. The dedicated 5G network is a closed 5G network separated from the general commercial network, ensuring a high-quality network and network security for critical power generation facilities. In terms of cost, it reduces expenses by more than 50% compared to building and operating a wired network.
Once the dedicated 5G network is completed, from the second half of the year, they plan to conduct demonstrations of the smart power plant, including IoT-based equipment diagnosis solutions and the operation of autonomous robots transporting parts between warehouses and the power plant.
