George Romero's 'Dawn of the Dead' Released Domestically After 42 Years

[Asia Economy Reporter Jonggil Lee] Director George Romero's film Dawn of the Dead (1978) will meet domestic audiences for the first time in 42 years. Distributor Peter Pan Pictures announced on the 31st that the film will be released domestically for the first time on the 15th of next month. Director Romero is the person who made zombies, originating from the voodoo rituals of the West Indies, a subject of horror. It depicts a world thrown into chaos as people infected by an unknown virus transform into monsters. In his ultra-low-budget production Night of the Living Dead (1968), zombies mercilessly attack humans with vacant eyes. Those bitten invariably become zombies. This cruel setting became a genre rule, adopted by many films produced afterward. Dawn of the Dead was completed with more than ten times the production budget after the success of Night of the Living Dead. By directing scenes of fighting zombies in a shopping mall setting, it criticized the reckless consumer culture of American capitalism, receiving praise from both audiences and critics.
