[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, emphasized the need to establish a new agricultural and food distribution network to prepare for disasters. He also urged people to participate in "good agricultural product consumption" to support farmers struggling due to the "novel coronavirus infection" (COVID-19).
On the afternoon of the 24th, Governor Lee visited the Gyeonggi Eco-friendly Agricultural Products Distribution Center in Gonjiam-eup, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi Province, to check the progress of the "package support project" and encourage the officials involved.
The Gyeonggi Eco-friendly Agricultural Products Distribution Center has received great responses by selling agricultural product packages to help farmers supplying school meals in the province who have been affected by COVID-19.
Governor Lee said, "When everyone is having a hard time and the school opening is postponed, the pain that farmers are experiencing seems to be very great," and promised, "If possible, besides the existing methods, we will try to find new ways to directly deliver the precious crops you have grown to housewives."
He added, "We need to create a new agricultural and food distribution network that can respond to disaster situations like COVID-19."
Recently, Gyeonggi Province, together with the Gyeonggi Agricultural and Food Distribution Promotion Agency and the Gyeonggi Eco-friendly Farmers Association, sold a 4kg box of "eco-friendly agricultural product packages" containing 11 leafy vegetable items such as spinach, young radish leaves (eolgari), mallow (auk), perilla leaves, lettuce, and green onions for 20,000 won to help farmers affected by COVID-19 in the province. The prepared quantity of 7,183 boxes was sold out in just two hours, receiving enthusiastic interest.
Governor Lee actively promoted the campaign through social networking services (SNS) such as Facebook and Instagram at the time, urging people to "join in good consumption," contributing to the "sold-out" success.
The province has been conducting a "sold-out thank-you event" since the 23rd.
On this day, Governor Lee held a meeting with Kang Wi-won, Director of the Gyeonggi Agricultural and Food Distribution Promotion Agency, Gu Hee-hyun, Chairman of the School Meal Operation Committee, and local farmers.
