[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Ju Cheol-in] Pohang City in Gyeongbuk announced on the 8th that it has donated 213.96 million won to help Daegu City, where a large-scale outbreak of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) occurred.
This donation was not from the disaster relief fund but was voluntarily raised by about 370 local organizations and individuals. Pohang Steel Management Corporation, Aerin Welfare Foundation, Lotte Construction, Nonghyup Pohang Branch, Pohang City employees, Pohang City Council, and the Cultural Foundation participated in the fundraising.
The city delivered the donation through the Red Cross without visiting directly to avoid interfering with Daegu City's administrative efforts, which are fully focused on overcoming COVID-19.
Lee Kang-deok, Mayor of Pohang, said, "Although the whole country is struggling with COVID-19, we are collecting and delivering donations through the mature civic consciousness of local residents," adding, "Daegu and Pohang are neighboring cities, so helping Daegu is natural, and we hope Daegu returns to normal life as soon as possible."
