Pre-Orders Reach 6,000 Units, High Popularity Raises Expectations
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Renault Samsung Motors is considering launching an LPG model of the compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) XM3. This strategy aims to dominate the compact SUV market by establishing an LPG lineup, following the XM3’s popularity, which achieved 6,000 pre-orders just 13 days after its release.
A Renault Samsung Motors official stated at the XM3 media unveiling event on the 5th, "We understand that consumers are discussing the LPG model a lot," adding, "The launch of the LPG model has not been finalized yet, but we will make a final decision after observing the market response."
The anticipation for the XM3 LPG model stems from Renault Samsung Motors being the only manufacturer with an LPG SUV model. Currently, there are 12 LPG vehicle models on sale, and among them, the only SUV is Renault Samsung’s QM6. Because of this, various online communities have speculated since last year that the XM3 might also be released as an LPG model. The strong initial performance of the XM3 has further heightened expectations.
LPG vehicles became available for general consumers after the government lifted related regulations in March last year. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea LPG Association, the average monthly sales of LPG vehicles from April to December last year reached 12,022 units, a 46% increase compared to the average monthly sales of 8,229 units in the first quarter before the regulation was lifted. This effect led to a reversal in the domestic LPG vehicle registration numbers last year, marking an increase for the first time in 10 years.
In particular, the QM6, the only LPG SUV in Korea, led the market with great popularity. Of the 47,640 QM6 units sold last year, LPG models accounted for 43% (20,726 units). Considering that the LPG model was launched on June 18 last year, this is an overwhelming market share. The QM6 continues to enjoy steady popularity, with LPG models making up 2,589 units (73.1%) of the 3,540 units sold in January this year, and 1,823 units (69.5%) of the 2,622 units sold in February.
An industry insider said, "Since most of the current QM6 sales are LPG vehicles, there is sufficient demand for LPG SUVs in the market," adding, "If the XM3 also launches an LPG model, Renault Samsung Motors could take the lead in the LPG SUV market."
