[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] A man in his 50s who was prosecuted for forcibly administering drugs to his prospective daughter-in-law was sentenced to five years in prison.

On the 6th, the Criminal Division 11 of Uijeongbu District Court (Chief Judge Kang Dong-hyuk) announced that defendant A (56), who was charged with rape and injury and violation of the Narcotics Control Act, was sentenced to five years in prison.

He was also ordered to complete 80 hours of sexual violence treatment programs and was restricted from employment at institutions related to children, adolescents, and persons with disabilities for five years.

The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The defendant committed an inhumane crime by forcibly administering drugs to the victim with the intent to rape, showing extremely bad criminal nature. Although the victim appears to have suffered considerable psychological shock, the defendant denied the crime for an unreasonable reason and even took drugs during the escape process, which makes the guilt severe."

On August 15 of last year, A took his prospective daughter-in-law, B, into his car and brought her to a pension in Pocheon City, Gyeonggi Province.

B was known to have taken care of family events of her boyfriend’s family and had a father-daughter-like relationship with A, so she did not suspect anything unusual.

After entering the duplex-structured room, A led B to the second floor, blindfolded her saying he would surprise her, and told her to stretch out her hands.

When B felt a prick on her arm, she quickly removed the towel and, upon seeing her prospective father-in-law holding a syringe, pressed the emergency button on her phone and ran out shouting for help.

During the police investigation, B tested positive for drugs.

B testified that her prospective father-in-law A forcibly administered drugs and had the intent to rape.

Erectile dysfunction medication was found in the room’s bathroom.

The police attempted to contact A, but he and his wife C (53) had gone into hiding; the two were caught 12 days after fleeing.

At the time of arrest, both were under the influence of drugs, and a large number of syringes were found nearby.

A admitted to administering drugs to B but denied the attempted rape.

However, the court did not accept A’s claims and found all charges guilty.

A’s wife, who was also charged with drug use and prosecuted without detention, was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year probation. She was also ordered to undergo 40 hours of probation and drug treatment programs.
