[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] As the spread of COVID-19 continues, Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) is concentrating all its efforts to respond to the pandemic, while warm support from residents is encouraging the staff working on the front lines of quarantine.
On the 29th of last month, Lee Yun-hwa, the CEO of Hansung Comprehensive Design, a local design company, donated 50 face shields made from a special material called Tyvek to the staff working at the screening clinics.
Compared to existing protective gear, these face shields are easy and quick to wear, greatly helping medical personnel and basic epidemiological investigators who need to perform their duties swiftly at the screening clinics.
Additionally, on the 2nd, an anonymous donor who runs a pharmacy near Hongdae Entrance left 200 bottles of vitamin drinks and 100 boxes of throat candies in front of the Mapo-gu Health Center to encourage the health center staff. On the same day, Father Park Jun-ho of Seongsan 2-dong Church in Mapo-gu sent 8 boxes of twisted doughnuts (kkwabaegi) as snacks, expressing his concern for the staff working hard to eradicate COVID-19.
Support also came from volunteers active in the volunteer camps. Volunteers from the volunteer camps in Seogang-dong and Sinsu-dong in Mapo-gu joined forces to produce handmade natural cotton masks. Through the activity of making natural cotton masks, the volunteers united with one heart and one mind to protect the health of neighbors from COVID-19, creating cotton masks that can be used semi-permanently with just light water washing.
The cotton masks, carefully made by the volunteers, will be provided to vulnerable groups in the community such as elderly living alone and people with disabilities who have difficulty securing masks due to the spread of COVID-19, as well as to staff working on the front lines of quarantine.
Furthermore, Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, concerned about the shortage of medical masks causing patients with underlying conditions, symptomatic individuals, the elderly, and medical staff to be unable to wear masks, decided to wear the cotton masks made by the volunteer camps.
He also posted messages on social media encouraging the wearing of cotton masks so that healthy residents would wear cotton masks first, ensuring that masks can be provided to those who truly need them.
Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun of Mapo-gu said, “It is a great strength that many people have extended helping hands to the staff who are working day and night to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Building on the warm hearts of residents and volunteers, Mapo-gu will continue to actively respond to COVID-19 to block community infections as much as possible and minimize damage.”
