[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province has completed the installation of information boards and signposts at 166 anti-Japanese movement historic sites within the province.
On the 28th, the province announced that it had completed a project to install information boards at 121 anti-Japanese movement sites and signposts at 45 sites within the province.
Since 2018, the province has been carrying out a project to install information boards and signposts at anti-Japanese movement historic sites to raise awareness of these locations.
In the first year of the project, 2018, 62 information boards and 20 signposts were installed. Last year, 59 information boards and 25 signposts were completed.
Before installing the boards and signposts, the province identified anti-Japanese historic sites through literature review and field surveys. A total of 257 sites were confirmed, including 38 buildings, 181 sites/locations, and 38 memorial facilities.
Among these, the sites where information boards and signposts were installed were established from the 1895 Eulmi Uibyeong (Eulmi Righteous Army) period up to the liberation in 1945.
The province installed information boards at 121 sites after expert evaluations based on importance, preservation status, usability, and accessibility, and after obtaining consent from the property owners.
The anti-Japanese movement information board project enhanced the accuracy of historical verification through expert consultations, field surveys, and discussions with city and county officials at each implementation stage. Additionally, the design of the boards prioritized citizen safety, carefully selecting installation locations, and the content was written concisely in simple terms to provide easily understandable information.
The province plans to produce a "Gyeonggi Province Anti-Japanese Movement Historic Sites Distribution Map" and distribute it to 31 cities and counties, the Veterans Affairs Office, and elementary and middle schools within the province.
A provincial official stated, "The installation of these information boards at anti-Japanese movement sites provides a medium of memory that can spread the noble spirit of the patriots left at these sites and strengthen pride. In particular, the Gyeonggi Province Anti-Japanese Movement Information Board Distribution Map is expected to revive forgotten anti-Japanese sites near us and be greatly utilized for education and exploration of these historic sites."
