[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] KT won the ‘UN SDGs Mobile Contribution’ award at the 2020 Global Mobile Awards held on the 25th (local time) for its infectious disease prevention platform (GEPP).
Now in its 25th year, the ‘Global Mobile Awards’ is a prestigious ICT industry awards ceremony organized by the GSM Association (GSMA). It selects winners based on major innovations and achievements across the mobile industry, including technology, devices, and content.
KT’s GEPP, honored in the ‘UN SDGs Mobile Contribution’ category, is a system that uses mobile data to block the spread of infectious diseases and enable timely responses. The judges commented, “It is an essential tool well-designed for global public health, and this approach and ecosystem collaboration have resulted in the development of an outstanding solution.”
KT’s GEPP utilizes telecommunications big data technology to provide traveler movement routes and infectious disease information to health authorities and individuals. In 2016, KT introduced the ‘Smart Quarantine System’ domestically in cooperation with the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT. It was introduced to overseas countries such as Kenya, Ghana, and Laos in 2019. KT stated, “We will continue to create cases of warm technology representing the Republic of Korea, like GEPP, and expand further globally.”
