Seongdong-gu Introduces 'Smart Electric Vehicle Chargers' with Installation Costs Reduced by 7 Times

64 Parking Spaces at Doseondong Public Parking Lot Equipped with New Smart Electric Vehicle Charging Facilities... Installation Cost Reduced to 1/7, Convenient Setup Enables Significant Expansion of Charging Stations, Good News for EV Users

Seongdong-gu Introduces 'Smart Electric Vehicle Chargers' with Installation Costs Reduced by 7 Times The 'Smart Electric Vehicle Charger' installed at Doseon-dong Public Parking Lot

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) has pilot-introduced the latest technology electric vehicle chargers that can reduce installation costs by up to seven times compared to existing electric vehicle charging facilities.

On the 19th, the district fully installed the latest electric vehicle chargers on 64 parking spaces on the third basement level of Doseon-dong Public Parking Lot (8 Muhak-ro 8-gil). This facility is a revolutionary technology that enables charging simply by replacing existing outlets with IoT-based outlets without the need for conduit construction, which requires digging the ground to install wires, reducing installation costs to less than one-seventh of the previous level.

This introduction became possible as Starcop, the developer of the technology, was selected under the government's ICT regulatory sandbox and registered as an electric vehicle charging business operator. It boldly allowed the charging business using ‘metered outlets,’ which previously did not meet the registration requirements for electric vehicle charging business operators under the Electric Utility Act.

A district official said, “The biggest obstacle residents felt when purchasing electric vehicles was the lack of charging facilities,” adding, “Now that affordable electric vehicle chargers have been introduced and installed in many parking lots including public parking lots in the area, it will be great news for residents using electric vehicles.”

The third basement level of Doseon-dong Public Parking Lot, the pilot site, allows electric vehicle charging anywhere there is an empty parking space just like regular vehicles. No separate dedicated parking spaces are required. As the electric vehicle adoption rate increases, conflicts between general vehicle users and electric vehicle users in limited parking spaces have been frequent, so high resident satisfaction is expected.

Additionally, the smart chargers can be remotely controlled using IoT, allowing real-time monitoring of malfunctions and prompt response. It is expected that cases where charging is impossible due to malfunction even after finding a charger will decrease.

The district plans to expand the installation to all public parking lots and community center parking lots in the area after a three-month pilot operation period.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Providing administrative services using various innovative technologies is most important to improve residents’ quality of life,” and added, “We will actively respond to the rapidly increasing demand for electric vehicles and strive to build a sustainable eco-friendly city.”
