Prime Minister Jeong: "60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations with Malaysia... Strengthening Strategic Cooperation in the New Southern Policy"


[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun announced on the 23rd that he exchanged congratulatory letters with Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Malaysia, according to the Prime Minister's Office.


Korea and Malaysia established diplomatic relations on February 23, 1960. The two prime ministers evaluated that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1960, Korea and Malaysia have strengthened cooperation in various fields including politics, economy, and society over the past 60 years.


They also stated that recently, Korea's New Southern Policy and Malaysia's Eastward Policy have harmonized, further solidifying the strategic cooperative relationship between the two countries.


Based on the trust and friendship built over 60 years, the two prime ministers agreed to cooperate more closely to strengthen Korea-Malaysia relations in the future.


Prime Minister Chung emphasized, "Malaysia has played a significant role in the development of Korea-ASEAN relations," and added, "Let us continue to work together to strengthen Korea-ASEAN relations."


Meanwhile, in addition to the two prime ministers, President Moon Jae-in and Malaysian King Abdullah, as well as Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and Foreign Minister Saifuddin, also exchanged congratulatory letters to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
