Unusual Spread of COVID-19... Racecourses to Close as Well

The Korea Racing Authority announced on the 22nd that it has decided to cancel the horse races scheduled for the 23rd and temporarily suspend operations at all business sites nationwide, including the Seoul, Busan-Gyeongnam, and Jeju racecourses, 30 branch offices, and ranches.

This measure was taken to actively respond to the rapidly spreading COVID-19 nationwide and to ensure the safety of visiting customers and local communities by suspending operations at all 36 business sites across the country.

Previously, the Authority had suspended the operation of cultural centers within its 30 branch offices nationwide and temporarily closed the Daegu off-track betting site, and from the 23rd, this suspension will be expanded to all business sites.

Until now, all business sites have been responding by equipping thermal imaging cameras, providing hand sanitizers and masks to prevent COVID-19. During the temporary suspension period, additional disinfection and sterilization will be intensively carried out at all 36 business sites nationwide, and preventive supplies will be secured. Separately, the Korea Racing Authority plans to support disinfection and sterilization activities not only at its business sites but also in the surrounding nearby areas.

A Korea Racing Authority official explained, "We made this decision because we judged that securing the safety of customers and local communities and actively participating in the national effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is the most important at this time."

Meanwhile, the Korea Racing Authority plans to decide on any further suspension after reviewing the future trend of COVID-19 spread and the prevention system, including disinfection and sterilization.
