Jongno-gu, Sewer and Rainwater Drain Dredging Construction

Creating a Safe and Convenient City to Prevent Flooding and Odors... Approximately 1.7 Billion Won Budget Allocated for 74km Sewer and Storm Drain Dredging

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) will carry out 'sewer and rainwater inlet dredging construction' by December to create a safe and convenient urban environment.

Currently, 16,183 rainwater inlets are installed in Jongno-gu, and a total of 343 km of sewer pipes extend throughout Jongno, playing a role in channeling various wastewater and rainwater to treatment plants.

Just as poor blood flow poses serious health risks, when sewers are contaminated by sediments and grease discharged from homes and restaurants, drainage becomes poor, causing inconveniences such as flooding and foul odors.

Accordingly, the district will invest about 1.7 billion KRW to carry out dredging work on 74 km of sewers and rainwater inlets. In particular, dredging in concentrated heavy rainfall management areas such as around Gwanghwamun will be completed before the rainy season to prevent flooding.

Additionally, in areas where odors frequently occur, such as restaurant districts, traditional markets, and residential areas, high-pressure water cleaning of sewers will be conducted at least once a month to minimize odor generation.

In areas with frequent complaints, investigations of pipelines will be conducted to identify causes of odor and flooding such as poor slope and grease sedimentation, and improvement measures including pipeline upgrades will be implemented.

District Mayor Kim Young-jong stated, “Safety is invisible but must be practiced from the most basic things. Through these efforts, we can achieve the goals of flood prevention and a pleasant urban environment, creating a sustainable and safe healthy city Jongno.”
