[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] On the 19th (local time), Bloomberg reported that Twitter is acquiring Chromalabs, a startup co-founded by former Facebook employees.
According to the report, Chromalabs is a startup specializing in photo and video editing for social media. With this acquisition, Chromalabs is expected to join efforts to enable Twitter users to express themselves more creatively through conversations in the future. It is also regarded as an acquisition aimed at creating Twitter's "new story tool." Twitter declined to comment on the terms of the acquisition.
Bloomberg explained the background, stating, "Twitter has long considered improving conversations on social media as its top priority," and "In recent weeks, Twitter has changed the way some users interact within the application and added features such as direct messaging with emoticons."
Chromalabs, co-founded by seven former Facebook employees, launched an app last fall that allows users to edit photos and videos before sharing stories on Instagram, Snapchat, and other platforms. Co-founders John Barnett and Alex Lee participated in Instagram Stories, augmented reality camera effects, and virtual reality projects during their time at Facebook. Early investors in Chromalabs include Index Ventures, Sweet Capital, and Combine VC.
John Barnett, one of Chromalabs' co-founders, said in a statement on the day, "We have helped users tell their stories visually and infused creativity," adding, "We will strive to deliver this mission on a larger scale."
