Meeting between the Korean Bar Association and the National Police Agency Discusses 'Measures to Strengthen the Right to Legal Counsel'

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-gi] The Korean Bar Association announced on the 17th that it held a 'Meeting to Strengthen the Guarantee of the Right to Legal Counsel' with the National Police Agency.

At this meeting, both parties discussed the basic direction of police investigation policies following the adjustment of investigative authority between the prosecution and the police. In the future, they plan to gather opinions from the Korean Bar Association's nationwide members and review and improve measures to expand the right to legal counsel during police investigations.

Last September, the Korean Bar Association and the National Police Agency signed a memorandum of understanding to guarantee the public's right to receive legal assistance from lawyers during police investigations, including the implementation of the Self-Lawyer Note system and measures to realize the right to lawyer participation.

Attending the meeting from the Korean Bar Association were Chairman Lee Chan-hee and Vice Chairman Yoo Cheol-hyung, and from the National Police Agency were Commissioner Min Gap-ryong and Investigation Bureau Chief Lee Gyu-moon.
