Immediate Food Package Support for Crisis Households at Risk of Food Insecurity
The Mabom Council in Chung-hyeon-dong, Seodaemun-gu, has launched the "Chunghyeon! Mabom S.O.S" project this year to provide immediate food packages to vulnerable households at risk of food insecurity.
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) is receiving praise for the Chunghyeon-dong Mabom Council’s initiative to keep five boxes of food packages at the local community center at all times to immediately support households at risk of food insecurity due to sudden crises.
The council started the so-called ‘Chunghyeon! Mabom S.O.S’ project earlier this year, recognizing that even in urgent cases, it usually takes several days to provide actual support.
When welfare officers identify a crisis during resident consultations, they immediately deliver these food packages. Last week, a man in his 50s facing financial difficulties received a food package, bringing the total number of residents served so far to four.
The boxes contain instant rice, ramen, canned goods, and other items.
Yu Gyusang, chairman of the Chunghyeon-dong Mabom Council, stated, “After learning about the so-called ‘modern-day Jean Valjean’ incident at the end of last year in Incheon, where a man in his 30s stole groceries from a mart to feed his young son, we launched this project to address welfare blind spots in our community.”
The ‘Mabom Council’ is the official name of the ‘Seodaemun-gu Dong Community Security Council,’ a public-private welfare cooperation organization at the neighborhood level, meaning ‘caring for neighbors’ hearts and the village.’ Currently, about 300 residents serve as Mabom Council members across all 14 neighborhoods in Seodaemun-gu.
