Son Yeol-eum is collaborating again with Onyx, which released her Mozart album in April 2018, to release a Schumann album. To commemorate the album release, she will embark on a nationwide tour, including a Seoul performance at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall on May 13.
This is Son Yeol-eum's third solo recital. She established herself as a world-class pianist by winning the second prize, the best performance award for the Mozart concerto, and the best performance award for the commissioned piece at the 14th International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in 2011. She held her first solo recital in 2013 and her second solo recital titled "Modern Times" in 2016.
For this performance, Son Yeol-eum will present a program consisting solely of Schumann's works to celebrate the release of the Schumann album. The pieces to be performed are "Kinderszenen," "Kreisleriana," "Fantasy," and "Arabeske," composed by Schumann between 1836 and 1839.
"Kinderszenen" is Schumann's first composition for and about children. "Kreisleriana" was inspired by the German novelist E. T. A. Hoffmann's work "The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr" and is characterized by Schumann's unique dreamy yet diverse emotional expression and dramatic structure. "Fantasy" expresses Schumann's anguish after falling in love with his teacher Wieck's daughter Clara but being unable to fulfill his wish due to his teacher's opposition. "Arabeske" is a bright, lovely, and beautiful dream-like piece composed after Clara turned 18 and accepted his marriage proposal.
Son Yeol-eum has stated that her favorite composers are Mozart and Schumann, especially Schumann's "Fantasy" and "Kreisleriana."
Son Yeol-eum has been active in various fields, including publishing an essay collection titled "Music Letters from Hanover," which compiles columns she contributed to newspapers, and serving as the artistic director of the Pyeongchang Daegwallyeong Music Festival since March 2018.
Tickets for Son Yeol-eum's piano recital will go on sale starting the 11th. Besides the Seoul Arts Center performance, she will perform at Yongin Poeun Art Hall on April 10, Gimhae Western Culture Center on April 11, Seoul Gangdong Art Center on April 18, Cheonan Arts Center on May 12, and Busan Cinema Center on May 30.
