[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) is promoting the ‘2020 Scholarship Project’ through the Yeongdeungpo-gu Scholarship Foundation, established and operated by the district, to discover and nurture future talents.
The district established the Yeongdeungpo-gu Scholarship Foundation in April 2015 and contributes a fixed amount annually to support outstanding students in the region, contributing 500 million KRW this year as well.
Through district contributions, corporate and individual donations, the goal is to build a fund worth 20 billion KRW by 2034.
The main scholarships operated by the district scholarship foundation include △ Talent Development Scholarship △ Academic Excellence Scholarship △ Yeongdeungpo Scholarship △ Multicultural Scholarship △ Special Talent Scholarship, among others.
Starting this year, the selection criteria for the ‘Talent Development Scholarship’ have been relaxed to benefit more students who diligently pursue their studies.
Previously, students who graduated from middle school in the Yeongdeungpo area and entered high school, ranking within the top 5% academically in their first year, were selected as ‘Talent Development Scholars,’ and second and third-year students maintaining a top 10% ranking were also selected. However, from 2020, the first-year student selection criteria will be expanded from the top 5% to the top 7%.
The ‘Academic Excellence Scholarship’ is awarded to second and third-year high school students who rank within the top 5% percentile in their previous year’s grades and are selected upon recommendation by their school principal.
The ‘Yeongdeungpo Scholarship’ is selected through recommendations by school principals and district heads based on academic performance and financial status among middle, high school, and university students.
Additionally, the ‘Multicultural Scholarship’ is awarded to students from multicultural families upon school principal recommendation, and the ‘Special Talent Scholarship’ is given to middle and high school students who placed within the top three in nationwide or larger competitions in sports, skills, mathematics, or science, selected based on evaluation criteria and school principal recommendation.
The district operates various scholarship programs to discover and support academically excellent and economically disadvantaged elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as talented individuals in arts and physical education fields. Over five years since the foundation’s establishment, approximately 966 scholars have received about 1.5 billion KRW in scholarships.
The district plans to continue supporting outstanding students in the region to further discover and nurture future talents.
Individuals or organizations interested in fostering and sponsoring future talents in the region can contact the Yeongdeungpo-gu Scholarship Foundation at ☎2670-3071.
Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “The most certain investment for the future is education, and we will continuously promote scholarship projects to nurture talents,” adding, “We ask for the residents’ great interest in the scholarship foundation supporting outstanding local talents.”
