[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Online bookstore Aladin announced on the 10th that sales of director Bong Joon-ho's 'Parasite Script & Storybook Set,' which won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film at the 2020 Academy Awards, surged following the news of the Academy Awards win.
According to Aladin, sales of the 'Parasite Script & Storybook Set' sharply increased immediately after 10:30 AM, when the news of the Academy Award for Best Screenplay was announced, with about 350 copies sold over the next six hours. This is a 23.3-fold increase compared to the average daily sales of 15 copies last week. Among buyers, 61.5% were women, with particularly high purchases by women in their 30s.
The 'Parasite Script & Storybook Set' includes the script written directly by director Bong Joon-ho, storyboards he personally drew and composed, and an interview discussing Bong Joon-ho's creative process and the world of the film. It also contains unreleased scenes that were edited out of the movie.
Director Bong Joon-ho said through the book, "This book is a cross-section of the times of the screenplay and storyboard, cut as if with a knife," adding, "In a way, it is a record of my loneliest and most solitary moments, quiet and personal moments before passing through the joyful chaos on the filming set."
Kyobo Bookstore also reported that while the average daily sales online were 10 copies, 350 copies had been sold by 5 PM on the 10th.
