[2020 Academy] Roger Deakins Wins Second Cinematography Award for '1917'

[Asia Economy Reporter Jonggil Lee] Roger Deakins, the cinematographer of the film ‘1917,’ won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. On the 9th (local time), at the 92nd Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, Deakins was honored, beating Rodrigo Prieto of ‘The Irishman,’ Lawrence Sher of ‘Joker,’ Jarin Blaschke of ‘The Lighthouse,’ and Robert Richardson of ‘Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.’

In this film about World War I, Deakins realistically illuminated the horrors of war. With a wide perspective and graceful camerawork, he minimized the risks of oversimplifying the story and created another narrative texture. This is Deakins’ second Academy Award for Best Cinematography. He first lifted the Academy trophy in 2018 for ‘Blade Runner 2049.’ His representative works include ‘No Country for Old Men (2007),’ ‘A Beautiful Mind (2001),’ ‘The Hurricane Carter (1999),’ ‘The Shawshank Redemption (1994),’ ‘Kundun (1997),’ and ‘007 Skyfall (2012).’
