[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The level of medical rehabilitation services at industrial accident insurance medical institutions designated by the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service has significantly improved.

The Service announced on the 10th that in the 2019 medical institution evaluation, which was divided into rehabilitation-certified hospitals focused on rehabilitation treatment and general hospitals focused on acute treatment, the overall score was 82.6 points, an improvement of 11.1 points from the previous year's overall score of 71.5 points.

The top rehabilitation-certified hospitals were Geumgang Asan Hospital, Samsung Changwon Hospital, Incheon Sarang Hospital, Myongji Hospital, and Mokpo Christian Hospital.

The top general hospitals included Busan Goryeo Hospital, Joeun Gangan Hospital, Heo & Lee Hospital, The W Hospital, Hyundai Uvis Hospital, Bupyeong Serim Hospital, Park Ae Hospital, KS Hospital, Suncheon Hanguk Hospital, and Hanmaeum Hospital, making a total of 15 institutions selected as top hospitals.

Since 2008, the Service has been evaluating industrial accident insurance medical institutions annually on 21 items across 9 areas including facilities, appropriateness of treatment processes, efforts to improve medical services, and publicness to enhance the quality of medical services for industrial accident workers.

In particular, the publicness evaluation item, which assesses the degree of efforts to realize social value through medical institutions' community activities, was introduced for the first time last year.

The Service plans to actively support the improvement of industrial accident medical service quality by providing a 5-10% additional rate for one year to excellent hospitals by type, and conducting administrative sanctions such as improvement orders and on-site consultations for underperforming hospitals.

Shim Kyung-woo, Director of the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service, stated, "Through fair and rational evaluation of industrial accident medical institutions, we will maximize the qualitative level of medical services and continuously improve the medical institution evaluation system to provide timely and proper rehabilitation treatment to industrial accident workers and promote their return to work."
