[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Changwoo Lee) is recruiting members for the ‘2020 Youth Council’ to promote youth participation in policy-making.
Now in its sixth year, the Youth Council is Dongjak-gu’s representative youth participation organization where young people directly discover and propose youth policies.
The target applicants are youths residing in the area and middle and high school students.
The application period is from the 17th of this month to March 16th.
Applicants can download the application form from the district website and submit it by mail or email (kim602@dongjak.go.kr) to the Education Policy Division (74 Noryangjin-ro).
After document screening and debate evaluation, up to 45 members will be selected.
The selected members will participate in various activities from March to December, including ▲ legislative workshops ▲ regular meetings in the first and second half of the year ▲ joint camps ▲ youth policy markets.
For more details, inquiries can be made to the Education Policy Division (☎820-9808).
Dongjak-gu Youth Council was the first in the nation in 2017 to create and enact an ordinance regarding the operation and composition of the Youth Council directly by youths.
Last year, the ‘Youth Autonomous Policy Market’ was held for the first time, proposing policies such as ▲ installation of protective fences near schools ▲ installation of cleanliness signs indicating trash bin locations ▲ gathering opinions on installing CCTV in school hallways, which received great support from youths.
So far, 200 youths have served as council members, deliberating and deciding on over 10 detailed policy agendas including culture, environment, and education.
Yoon Soyeon, head of the Education Policy Division, said, “We will continue to support various activities so that youths can actively participate in the youth-related policy-making process,” and added, “We hope many interested youths will participate.”
This year, the district has allocated a total education budget of 3.524 billion KRW, a 19% increase from the previous year, to realize a happy innovative education city. The budget will support school environment improvements, future creative classrooms, new sports, and other school-specific projects, as well as create youth creative innovation experience spaces, continuing projects to nurture future talents.
