The Goguryeo-Balhae Society announced on the 3rd that it awarded this year's Academic Award to Jin-Kwang Kim, Director of the Cultural Contents Compilation Office at the Academy of Korean Studies. This decision was based on his paper titled "A Study on the Correlation between the Construction of Cremation Tombs and Changes in Political Forces - Focusing on Balhae Tomb Cases from the 7th to 10th Centuries," published in the 65th volume of the academic journal "Goguryeo-Balhae Research." In this paper, Director Kim analyzed the distribution and chronological changes of cremation tombs to examine the process of political power restructuring in Balhae. He also argued that the Malgal, who were the core force immediately after the founding, gradually declined. Director Kim earned his Ph.D. from the Academy of Korean Studies and has served as a visiting researcher at the Balhae History Research Institute of Yanbian University in China and as a senior researcher at the East Asian History Research Institute of the Academy of Korean Studies. His publications include "Exploration of the Northern Kingdom Balhae" and "A Study on the Governance System during the Reign of King Mun of Balhae."
