South Korean Government Plans Charter Flight to Evacuate 500 'Wuhan Evacuees' (Comprehensive)

Over 400 Koreans Hope for Charter Flight Evacuation

[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] The government is considering deploying charter flights to evacuate Korean nationals, including expatriates remaining in Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the novel coronavirus (Wuhan pneumonia) outbreak.

An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on the 26th, "We are reviewing plans to repatriate Korean nationals wishing to return from Wuhan, China, through the deployment of charter flights," adding, "We are closely coordinating with Chinese authorities and relevant domestic agencies on all necessary measures."

The government is prioritizing the transportation of expatriates via charter flights and is negotiating with Chinese authorities; however, the official noted that the possibility and timing of deploying charter flights remain uncertain.

It is estimated that 500 to 600 Korean nationals currently reside in Wuhan, including students, self-employed individuals, and company employees. None of them are known to be confirmed or suspected cases of Wuhan pneumonia.

The Korean Consulate General in Wuhan is already conducting a survey among Koreans residing there regarding the demand for charter flights, with over 400 people expressing willingness to board if such flights are operated.

The government is also preparing quarantine measures for those isolated in Wuhan upon their return. On the 24th, the government held an emergency meeting on the 'Wuhan pneumonia' chaired by Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, deciding to proceed with plans to repatriate Korean expatriates stranded in Wuhan using charter flights and other means.

The Chinese government has suspended all flights and train operations departing from Wuhan and has blocked highways and regular roads leading out of the city. A government official said, "Foreigners are understood to be able to leave using private vehicles with permission from the Chinese government," adding, "The Consulate General in Wuhan is accepting related applications."
