[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] It has been confirmed that there are no Korean nationals among the victims of the earthquake that occurred in eastern Turkey.

According to Yonhap News on the 25th, a representative of the Korean Embassy in Turkey stated, "There are no Koreans on the list of deceased announced by Turkish authorities, and it has been confirmed that no Korean residents were injured or suffered significant property damage."

The official added, "There are five Korean households living in the affected area, and all were contacted this morning. The Korean residents living in Malatya only felt the tremors."

On the 24th (local time) at around 8:55 PM, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred near the village of Sivris in Elazı?, eastern Turkey. The affected area is located approximately 750 km east of the capital, Ankara.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Turkey (AFAD), at least 21 people have died and more than 1,030 have been injured due to this earthquake. AFAD reported that 17 people died in Elazı? and 4 in the neighboring area of Malatya. The injured are currently receiving treatment, and the death toll may rise.

Turkey is prone to frequent earthquakes due to unstable tectonic plates. In 1999, two major earthquakes struck northwestern Turkey, resulting in approximately 18,000 deaths. In 2011, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit eastern Van province, killing at least 523 people.
