During Lunar New Year Holiday, 'Honhaengjok' Surge... Thailand's Bangkok Ranks No.1 Popular Travel Destination Bangkok Cooking Class

[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Saeng-hye] During the Lunar New Year holiday, the proportion of 'solo travelers' traveling alone surged significantly. The increase in single-person households and changing holiday customs were cited as the main reasons for the rise in solo travelers.

Online travel agency Trip.com announced on the 26th that an analysis of airline ticket and hotel sales during this year's Lunar New Year holiday period (January 23-28) showed that single-person airline ticket bookings accounted for 50% of the total, marking the highest figure. The top travel destinations booked by solo travelers for airline tickets were Bangkok in first place, Da Nang second, and Taipei third, while the top hotels were in Bangkok, Taipei, and Da Nang, respectively.

This Lunar New Year holiday was shorter than in the past, lasting only four days, which is analyzed to have increased the proportion of solo trips that are easy to prepare for and take. In particular, there was a high preference for destinations where rest and sightseeing could be enjoyed simultaneously within a limited period. Popular destinations such as Bangkok, Da Nang, and Taipei offer cost-effective hotels and unique activity experiences, making them ideal for solo travelers to enjoy a variety of travel experiences alone.

Bangkok is perfect for solo travelers seeking cost-effectiveness, as it offers 5-star hotel facilities and services at reasonable prices compared to other cities. Additionally, there are unique experience programs such as visiting local markets to purchase ingredients and participating in cooking classes to make local food, as well as one-day classes to learn the traditional Thai martial art Muay Thai. There are also plenty of activities suitable for spending time alone, including tours of the royal palace, temples, and floating markets.

Da Nang, once a typical family travel destination, has also become popular among solo travelers. This is because it offers affordable prices where visitors can enjoy relaxation, marine sports, and sightseeing without burden. Many hotels and resorts offer views of 'My Khe Beach,' one of the world's six most beautiful beaches, making it perfect for relaxation. Visitors can enjoy various marine sports such as snorkeling and sea walking on the beautiful beach, and there are tour packages that allow you to visit Da Nang's representative attractions like Ba Na Hills and Hoi An.

Taipei is a great travel destination with numerous nicknames such as 'City of Gourmet Food,' 'Hot Spring Destination,' and 'Hidden Shopping Paradise.' It is especially attractive because the transportation frequently used by solo travelers is well developed. Major subway lines are home to department stores and shopping centers, making shopping convenient. True to its reputation as a hot spring city, numerous hot springs are scattered throughout the city, making it a great place to relieve travel fatigue.

A Trip.com official said, "The changing family structures due to the increase in single-person households seem to have had a significant impact on travel trends during the Lunar New Year holiday."
