Check Your Car Insurance Riders Before Going Back to Your Hometown

Short-Term Driver Expansion Special Clause for Shift Driving

Legal Support Cost Special Clause to Cover Fines

Check Your Car Insurance Riders Before Going Back to Your Hometown

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] If you have to drive long distances during the Lunar New Year holiday, it is advisable to carefully check your auto insurance riders or driver insurance. This year’s holiday period is short, so congestion on the way home and the risk of traffic accidents are expected to increase significantly.

According to the insurance industry on the 23rd, if a person who is not included in the driver scope defined in the auto insurance drives and causes an accident, the insurance will not cover it. You must subscribe to the auto insurance driver rider before driving.

The short-term driver extension rider allows you to temporarily expand the driver scope if you need to entrust driving to someone else. The coverage does not start from the time of subscription but only from 24:00 on the subscription date to 24:00 on the end date, so you must subscribe the day before in advance.

If you need to drive someone else’s vehicle, you can subscribe to the other auto driver liability rider. Even if you or your spouse drive a vehicle owned by someone outside the family and cause an accident, you can receive compensation for 'Bodily Injury Liability II', 'Property Damage Liability', and 'Personal Injury' from the comprehensive insurance you subscribed to.

In case of emergencies such as tire punctures, unlocking, or emergency towing during operation, you can use the emergency dispatch service provided by non-life insurance companies. These companies operate 24-hour accident compensation centers and support towing, emergency refueling, battery charging, tire replacement, and unlocking services. Some insurers also allow easy application via smartphone apps.

You can also use the legal support cost rider of your auto insurance without separately subscribing to driver insurance. It covers up to 30 million KRW for criminal settlement fees and up to 5 million KRW for attorney fees. Fines are also covered up to 20 million KRW. If you only want coverage for these three costs, you can save on premiums by choosing legal cost support.

If you are involved in a hit-and-run accident while driving, it is recommended to use the compensation program operated by the government. This system protects victims of accidents caused by hit-and-run or uninsured vehicles.

If the victim dies, compensation of up to 150 million KRW is provided; for injuries, up to 30 million KRW; and for aftereffects disabilities, up to 150 million KRW. Treatment costs, lost income, and loss of earnings can be compensated within these limits. After reporting the accident to the police and applying to the non-life insurance company entrusted with the compensation program, you can receive compensation after review.
