[Asia Economy Reporter Osangdo] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 22nd that it will invest 65.4 billion KRW in disaster safety technology research and development (R&D) this year. This amount is a 22.0% increase from last year's 53.6 billion KRW and will be allocated to 94 projects.
According to the Ministry, 43 of the total projects were newly selected this year. These projects were chosen through public contests involving citizens and local governments, focusing on technology development closely related to citizens' daily lives.
Among the newly launched region-customized disaster safety problem-solving projects this year are a big data-based urban wildfire prevention system (Gangwon), a traffic situation detection system for preventing road facility accidents (Gwangju), and a crime prevention and life safety response system for vulnerable households (Gyeonggi).
Additionally, research projects addressing daily life and climate-related issues include early fire warning and evacuation systems for densely populated facilities, interactive chatbot technology for life safety situation management, heatwave reduction technology considering urban environments, and 5G-based emergency disaster messaging.
The Ministry plans to open a public contest for research institutions to carry out 33 of the new projects by the 24th of next month. Detailed information can be found on the Ministry of the Interior and Safety website.
