[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Lawyer Gwak Sang-eon (49), known as the son-in-law of former President Roh Moo-hyun, has joined the Democratic Party of Korea and declared his candidacy for the general election. Lawyer Gwak emphasized, "People still call me the son-in-law of former President Roh, but from today, I will find my mission under the name Gwak Sang-eon."

On the morning of the 22nd, Lawyer Gwak held a press conference at the National Assembly Press Hall with former Seoul Deputy Mayor for Administration Kang Tae-woong and former Money Today editor-in-chief Park Jong-guk to announce his candidacy. At the press conference, Lawyer Gwak said, "I am lawyer Gwak Sang-eon," and declared his candidacy for Chungbuk, Boeun, Yeongdong, and Goesan.

Regarding his decision to run, he said, "While working as a lawyer, I realized that ideals and reality are different. I developed a desire to create a world where people can be happy just by following the law well," adding, "The answer I found is politics." He continued, "Although I was born and raised in Seoul, Yeongdong County, my ancestral home, is where my ancestors have lived for the past 100 years and where their spirits reside," and added, "From the Democratic Party's perspective, it is a difficult district, but I am willing to start my political career in Chungbuk, where my ancestors lived."

Lawyer Gwak said, "People still call me the son-in-law of former President Roh," but added, "From today, I will find my mission under the name Gwak Sang-eon." He emphasized, "I believe that is the path to follow the politics of the elder whom many people follow."

When asked if the death of former President Roh influenced his decision to run, he said, "It certainly had an influence, but it is not the sole reason." He also said, "I always intended to engage in politics, but important matters such as lawsuits against former President Park Geun-hye and lawsuits regarding household electricity bills delayed it. Now, with only the 2020 verdict remaining, I have decided to participate."

Yoon Ho-jung, Secretary-General of the Democratic Party, who attended the press conference, said, "He has decided to run despite the difficult district," and emphasized, "The party will actively support him."

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party is continuously presenting 'named' (famous) figures as cards for the general election. Regarding former Presidential Secretary Im Jong-seok, who declared he would not run, Democratic Party leader Lee Hae-chan said, "Seeing him appear on policy broadcasts, it seems he has not completely left the party," and added, "I intend to invite him." Former Blue House spokesperson Go Min-jung shared an anecdote on her Facebook about bus number 721, which ends in Gwangjin District, saying, "The people changed the president with candlelight protests, but not yet the National Assembly. Now, I intend to complete that picture with my own hands," expressing her intention to run in the general election.
