[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Su-wan] The final relocation site for the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport has been decided as the joint candidate site of 'Gunwi-gun Sobomyeon and Uiseong-gun Bianmyeon.'
According to the Gyeongbuk Provincial Election Commission on the 22nd, in the resident vote held the previous day to select the final relocation site for the integrated new airport, the combined score of the joint candidate site 'Gunwi-gun Sobomyeon and Uiseong-gun Bianmyeon' surpassed that of the single candidate site 'Gunwi-gun Ubo-myeon.'
Detailed results of the resident vote show that the voter turnout for the joint candidate site among Uiseong residents was 88.69% with a 90.36% approval rate, while the voter turnout for the single candidate site among Gunwi residents was 80.61% with a 76.27% approval rate.
The score calculated by equally combining the turnout and approval rates was 89.52 for 'Sobomyeon and Bianmyeon,' higher than 78.44 for Ubo-myeon.
Previously, the Daegu Military Airport Relocation Site Selection Committee decided to select the site with the higher score by combining the resident vote approval rate (50%) and turnout rate (50%) for the two candidate sites.
The 'Special Act on the Relocation and Support of Military Airports' stipulates that after the resident vote is completed, the local government heads of the candidate sites must faithfully reflect the voting results and apply to the Minister of National Defense for the military airport relocation.
However, Kim Young-man, the Gunwi-gun governor, expressed disagreement with the vote count results and announced his intention to apply for the Ubo-myeon site, which scored lower.
Upon the decision of the integrated new airport site as the joint candidate site, Governor Kim issued a statement saying, "We take the will of the Gunwi residents expressed through the resident vote seriously," and added, "We will apply for the Gunwi-gun Ubo area as the Daegu Airport relocation site and hope that the final relocation site will be promptly decided according to the procedures."
The integrated new airport relocation site will be decided by faithfully reflecting the resident vote results, with the local government heads of the candidate sites applying for the relocation, and the Relocation Site Selection Committee reviewing and resolving the final site.
A total of 300 billion KRW will be supported in the area surrounding the integrated new airport, which will relocate and construct both Daegu Airport and the military airport (K-2) currently located in Dong-gu, Daegu. Of this, 150 billion KRW will be invested in the joint candidate site of Uiseong-gun Bianmyeon, and 150 billion KRW in Gunwi-gun Sobomyeon, respectively.
