POSCO University Student Volunteer Group 'Beyond' Conducts Volunteer Activities in Indonesia

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] POSCO's university student volunteer group 'Beyond' conducted school construction and educational volunteer activities in Cilegon, Indonesia, from the 11th to the 20th.

'Beyond' is a university student volunteer group established by POSCO in 2007 as the first domestic company initiative to nurture global exemplary talents. Every year, 100 university students selected nationwide engage in various volunteer activities domestically and abroad over eight months.

It is also a core program of 'Becoming and Creating Global Model Citizens,' one of the six representative corporate citizenship projects announced by POSCO last December at the corporate citizenship performance sharing event.

This time, a total of 120 students participated in activities in Indonesia, including 100 members of the 13th POSCO Beyond group selected in May last year and 20 Indonesian Beyond members who are Indonesian scholarship students supported by the POSCO Chungam Foundation.

First, POSCO 'Beyond' carried out construction volunteer activities at five village schools near Krakatau POSCO in Indonesia. They rebuilt a library at risk of collapse and installed sinks, recycling stations, and stairs on sloped paths, improving the school environment so that local students can study in a clean and safe setting.

In particular, POSCO 'Beyond' directly planned and conducted 'global citizenship education' to encourage Indonesian youth to take an interest in pressing social issues such as environmental problems and energy recycling.

Meanwhile, POSCO Beyond has produced over 1,300 members to date. Domestically, it has built 15 steel houses for fire victims and low-income families across 13 cities and 182 fire-affected sites. Overseas, it has carried out house-building volunteer activities in four countries?India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam?benefiting over 120 families, with a total of 1,328 beneficiaries as of last year.
